Ok, first of all, I came to this University from out of state, so I'm pretty sure I was at a disadvantage from the word go. This school actually looks good on paper since it is in a fairly nice area of the country and is newly built. However, I quickly found out that being from out of state, not having a car and not knowing anyone were not good combinations. Make no mistake about it, this is a suitcase school. People just pack up and leave on the weekends. I really didn't think I'd need a car my first year of college. Boy was I wrong. Just about everyone at this school has a car. In addition, when I went to FMU (00-01) it was roughly 1/3 black. I definitely don't have a problem with this, but down in that part of the south it's still not really cool for whites and blacks to hang out. There are still black parties and white parties, as well as other socially segregated activities. The clickyness of this school doesn't end there. There's also the frat scene. I felt like I had to join a frat just to have a social life. It was terrable. I guess you could avoid that pressure if you played a sport (specifically a popular sport, like basketball or soccer). So if you want to hang out with people at this school and have anything resembling a normal college experience, you either have to join a frat (or sorrority I guess), play a big name sport or be black (which is a fraternity in and of itself). I realized about two months after being at FMU that I wanted to transfer. Thankfully I was able to and starting attending a quality university back home. Attending FMU was one of the biggest mistakes of my life and I am so glad I was able to correct it. If you live in the Florence area and are looking to take some pretty cheap classes, then feel free to go for it if you have no other options. But if you are looking for anything resembling a real college experience, then PLEASE go somewhere else. I would not want anyone to make the same mistake I did.
