Major: Unknown (This Major's Salary over time)
Ohio University is a beautiful campus, in the middle of a extremely poor community with run down buildings and closed-down businesses everywhere you look. The dorms are very very very poorly kept. There are so many revisions that should be made—especially windows which should be entirely replaced because they are drafty, break easily, and just for the sheer fact that someone last year died from falling out of one (Yes, that guy was on shrooms, but I'm sure that the poor quality of these windows could easily be a factor)It's terrible to get a job in Athens, because you have all the same students competing over the same several locations located on a total of two likely streets for any student employment. (E. State and Court) Also, the nearest decent shopping mall is about an hour away or more in any direction from the campus. No good music or bands ever come to Athens and it's extremely dull in the city itself unless you are one to begin your weekend boozefest on wednesday nights.
I enjoy my department and I enjoy the faculty, but the extracurriculars are scarce.
I expected OU to be a good place for me because it was sort of far away from home, but not too far. The beautiful, mostly safe campus also lured me in. I felt like OU students would be open-minded and artistic people because the environment is so secluded and homey and seemingly friendly. I also felt like academics would be great because there weren't a lot of things to distract students from getting good grades (IE, NOTHING ELSE TO DO IN THIS TOWN BUT EITHER STUDY OR DRINK)Instead, that's what I got. I'd say about 85% of the people I've met are very much into partying all the time and drinking, staying out late, waking up neighbors, being disrespectful to police and fellow students, setting things on fire in the street, endless. Halloween is not any fun. I don't consider a good time to be so crowded with people (mostly those who don't even go to OU) who are taking the opportunity to go to the well-famed biggest party to be complete assholes and destroy property.
It's really hard to find decent peers and decent recreation, shopping, places to go, etc in Athens, OH. I hated it and I probably will transfer out after this year.
