My four years at Lee University were most interesting. I found that my preconceived expectations were inaccurate after becoming involved in campus life both in academics and in student activities. I am very disturbed by what I perceive to be an extremely unhealthy, blind allegiance to the university president and his son-in-law (who was strategically positioned as a Vice President). The faculty are fearful that they might lose favor with the president and end up losing their jobs. That being said- they work hard to be "liked" by the students and certain "key" administrators who have a direct line of communication to the president. In my experience, this affected the quality of my experience both inside and outside of the classroom. This "fear" diminishes academic freedom and minimizes healthy academic controversy/debate which is what college is supposed to be about. It is important not to teach in a manner that could potentially violate the tenets of the sponsoring denomination (Church of God). But most importantly, faculty and staff must NEVER question university policies/practices or the performance of select key leaders. I was oblivious to this dynamic until I started part-time student employment at the university and got to know faculty and other staff better. They lowered their guard a bit and became more open that they had been in the classroom. If you are interested in studying psychology and are interested in group behavior, you will be stimulated for sure. Pay close attention to how the president is elevated by faculty and student leaders. It is simply fascinating! (BTW- he does seem like a genuinely nice guy).
