I'm a straight male first year; academically this school is incredible. I love my classes, the work is stimulating and rewarding, and the professors are almost always at your fingertips when you need them. I get to know all of my professors and develop good personal relationships with them and get to clear up every thing I don't understand in class in our bi-monthly meetings. My only complaints about the classes is that if you're not doing writing or arts, its a little difficult to find classes that are interesting if you're not into learning about third world countries (especially Econ and History)…everything is about Africa or Latin America. In psych, its all about children which is kind of a drag.

The Social life here is ABSOLUTE garbage. The kids here are some of the most pretentious people I've ever been exposed to. Everyone is out to prove themselves as some new up and coming tortured artist (when most of them are rich kids who's biggest struggle is living in a dorm instead of their penthouses and mansions), or some kind of philosopher. The big thing here is talking about Nietzsche constantly and it gets obnoxious when you're trying to have a normal conversation and some hipster pseudo-intellectual has to try to somehow incorporate Kant and Nietzsche into it. Kids are standoffish and entitled; they think that they have it so much worse than everyone else and need to tell everyone. Every person here has a geometric shape tattoo as well (especially triangles) and make sure you see them. Its unfortunate, but if it weren't for the amazing education here, I would transfer immediately.

responseWhile it's true that there are certain entitled kids on campus who reference Nietzsche because it makes them feel big, it's also true that there are just as many who talk about Nietzsche because that's genuinely what they're interested in (and in some cases, obsessed with). We all have our little corners of knowledge that we fanatically research and dream about, and so we view the world through the lenses of OMG NIETZSCHE (or whoever else) IS SO GREAT; that's often why people change conversations in ways that seem completely irrelevant to everyone else. You can either go with the flow or you can get annoyed, but keep in mind that people come to Sarah Lawrence specifically for those sorts of conversations. Of course, sometimes it is just the pretentiousness. Since I've never seen anyone here with a geometric tattoo, or talked about Nietzsche or Kant within the past three months, and since I like to sit with different groups of people during meals, I suggest you do the same if you wish to avoid such topics.
