Although Hayward is basically a ghetto, it was great to be so close to SF. The BART station is only 1 mile from campus and the shuttle runs from campus to the BART pretty regularly- so that's a plus. The view over the city is fantastic.

Unfortunately, and probably due to budget cuts, the administration is disorganized and inept. Be sure to save copies of everything! I had to send my transcritps twice because they got lost. You have to be on top of everything and keep careful records, or when charges pop up on your account they will be difficult to dispute. Everything takes so long, from getting accepted, to processing financial aid, having transcripts reviewed, and getting an advisor. The right hand does not know what the left is doing…I consider myself to be an understanding person, but I was frustrated with the red tape, hoops and gross incompetence I experienced almost on a daily basis. (I did learn to become more tenacious and assertive as a result- a plus.)

Do not live on campus unless you have to! The prices are ridiculous, and even if you are in an apt. you are required to get the 5 meal a week meal plan ($200. a month)- I would have been able to eat much healthuier meals if I had been able to use that money towards groceries. I checked the off-campus housing at the edge of campus and they are much less expensive and more spacious than on campus housing.

The classes I took felt like HS classes- lots of work in some, but unmotivating and disconnected to course outcomes and content.

One of the reasons I came here was for the ethnic and cultural diversity, but I found that people tend to hang out with others from their own ethnic group, and although I made connections within several groups, I found many of the students to be closed minded and prejudiced. Very disappointing.

If you want an opportunity to go to a relatively inexpensive school that is located near SF, I suggest you go for a trimester or two for the experience. I loved the promimity to SF and took full advantage of it.

Good Luck!
