Major: Chemistry (This Major's Salary over time)
I am a Chemistry major at Lewis. I would have to say the people in the Chemistry program are great. Most of the faculty are really knowledgeable and they know what is out there in the real world. You can do research early on as an undergraduate. As far as the university itself, I feel they are really about their image. They are caught up in their mission. Everything is about those five words that they put in every syllabus and on every sign that no one ever reads. It is supposed to be a religious school but if you are coming here thinking it is anything like your Catholic high school, you are wrong. It feels like any other small college. The only reminders of being in a Christian environment are the crosses, Christmas decorations, and church bells every hour. Some department are worse than others. Don't expect much help from anyone in academic services, financial aid, or the business office. The library has horrible hours so don't expect to be there past midnight (on a weekday—except during finals time). The food is okay but overpriced. The contractor, Sodexo, is full of very rude and incompetent employees. On weekends, most of the residents go home (most students live in the area) and the campus is dead. Most of the dining is closed, the campus store is understocked, and you will be stuck with nothing to do. Do not think this is a party school either. It is not. The RA's and the police are very strict and besides you are not likely to find anyone to party with. The aviation, education, and nursing programs get all the credit but even they are lackluster. If you fall behind in the nursing program, you are out. If you do not meet standards in the education department, you are disliked. Do not come here to be a pilot, you can spend your money more easily getting ratings at a private flight school. It is very easy to get away with a lot of things here though and if you are a favorite of someone high up you can get whatever you want. I know someone who graduated with a degree they barely took any classes for because they had connections. The campus looks really nice but that is because they spend so much time on landscaping and other projects that make you shake your head everyday. The only major clubs are watered down fraternities and sororities and ethnic groups. The only reason I came here was because they offered me a huge scholarship. From what I hear they offer that to a lot of people. It is a very safe school. We have barely any crime (and I would define that as marijuana, petty vandalism, and underage drinking). Most of the students are friendly when you get to know them. But don't expect to make a lot of friends unless you are just a social butterfly. I have been here for a while and I barely have anyone to talk to. Most people just do their own thing.
