UC San Diego is not what you would expect since it's in Southern California.

Let me emphasize this:

UCSD does not provide the stereotypical college experience, at all. UCSD focuses on academics and independence…nothing else. If you want the college experience in San Diego, I would suggest San Diego State if in-state and San Diego (if you are religious!) out-of-state.

Anyway, this is not to say that UCSD is a bad school by all means. UCSD is a superb school, which is why it's so damn high in many college rankings. The only college rankings I can see UCSD nonexistent in are social attributes such as athletics, greek life, and the what not. The only social attributes that are provided greatly at UCSD are the local area (well, duh), weather, transportation, housing, and dining options.

UCSD has provided my sister just the college experience she wanted. A school that focuses on academics and nothing else, with superior weather and the surrounding area. Academics is what brings this school to it's reputation now, it is that strong. The lectures with 200+ students…yeah they do exist, but they do an excellent job with it.

If you don't believe me, visit the campus yourself. When I visited, I knew for sure why the cons at UCSD exist.

Basically if you are independent, academic oriented, and demand for an ideal area—this is the school for you. The college experience in the movies? Oh, if that's the case you will be miserable here.
