Bryn Mawr was, and is, known for its preference for brilliant eccentrics. Scholarship was regarded as a vocation, akin to being anointed by God, and there was a considerable cachet to being able to claim that one had been a social outcast in high school. On the one hand, this atmosphere fostered a certain amount of pretension and/or preciosity; on the other, standards of academic honesty were high and most people's social interactions interesting. Bryn Mawr is not for everyone, and not even for every bright woman student, but high school seniors who find *Pride and Prejudice* laugh-out-loud funny or who wish they lived in the pages of *Gaudy Night* should certainly consider applying. I appreciate the relationships I formed there rather more than the academic training I received, but despite my ambivalence about the College, I would probably still go there were I applying to colleges today.
