UCSD is a pretty laid back campus, the people are all intelligent but they arn't super competetive like at Berkeley where people don't even give you the time of day. UCSD also isn't really known for its parties. If you want to go have fun you have to look around or know people who know where all the happening spots are. As far as work definitely try and get all your reading and homework done when ever you get a free moment, because you never know when everyone might decide they want to go to the beach and leave you behind because you didn't study for that midterm earlier. Lastly you can skip class, but I don't really recommend it unless you really know what you're doing.
