I LOVE WES! First of all, because of great, open-minded, and diverse people at Wes. Wes is a diverse place, though one may argue that geographically, most students come from NE or NYC area. But it's also about what people interested in, which makes Wes such as a vibrant place. I love the laid-back, hippies kind of attitude (it's sort of getting less though), but academics is not laid back at all. Well, you can choose I guess. Resources are abundant, if you know where to get them, you can get so much out of it. There's a strong sense of independence, from what to major or double major (can even make your own), study abroad programs, extracurricular (make your own!), sports team, community service, etc. Although exploring what to major/what to do in life/and be flexible with it is a big lesson I got Wes, I found it best to recognize what you're interested in early. Believe me, you can get so much more out of it I you do! And yes, Middletown is kinda sucks, but it's getting better... Lots to do on campus anyway.

I think Wesleyan is a magnificent place for the open-minded student. There are many opportunities provided and one can get involved in just about anything. Students, however, tend to get bogged down in politically correct jargon...to the point where it is difficult to get anything resolved. An example of this is the recent developments between factions in the queer community. Either way though, I wouldn't choose to spend my college years anywhere else. I am abroad now, and can't wait to go back for my senior year.

Wesleyan is a hard place to describe in so few words. I have loved the vast majority of my time there and when I'm away I always look forward to going back. I've had many great experiences there both academically and socially. It's definitely a place that's good for a certain type of individual: self-starting, self-confident people who aren't afraid to challenge themselves in various ways.

That being said, Wesleyan's reputation for excessive liberalism and poltical correctness is perhaps a little overstated. While there is this element at the university, the majority of the students are not unreasonable if their political beliefs and the expression of them. In fact, I wasn't even expecting there to be as much variety of opinions and experiences as there was. Wesleyan is on the big side for a liberal arts college (2800 undergrads now) so it's not hard at all to find people, places, activities, and classes that interest you if you keep your eyes open.The Wesleyan experience really is different for everyone though - it all depends who you want to meet and what you want to do. I encourage anyone who's thinking of applying to visit and stay overnight, keeping in mind that even that is only one small slice of what life is like at Wes. I personally have made great friends and had great classes and met lots of people who had the same outlook on life and college that I did (that college is to learn, not to get a job, and doing what you love would lead to enough success in life anyway).
