Marymount Manhattan College

I applied to MMC solely because I wanted to go to school in NYC and MMC seemed to be the most affordable and to have a pleasant atmosphere. MMC is indeed a great school in some aspects. Most of the teachers are invested in their work and students, and every year the school's appearance and facilities improve. I am an international studies student at MMC and the reading curriculum and professors are as good as at any large university. Many of my professors have or do work for the UN or other prestigious organizations, teach at NYU, Columbia, Barnard and other schools, and have doctorates in their field. The student body however leaves a bit to be desired- unless you are extraordinarly outgoing, dimwitted or involved in the arts programs. Regardless of what the school may advertise, interships and opportunities to study abroad must be found on one's own and attending classes at other colleges (like language classes at NYU or Hunter) involves much work on the student's behalf, with little faculty help. I have enjoyed living in the heart of Manhattan for a number of years now, but reflecting back upon my college experience I wish that I had attended a larger school with more intellectual students, more degree and course options (I couldn't obtain a minor in Frnech in the four years I've attended MMC, because not all of the required courses have been offered!), and with better financial aid (scholarships are based more on need rather than scholarly achievement). Ultimately, if you are a go-getter, who can afford NYC living and who is fairly certain what academic path you want to take, then MMC may be a great place to spend your undergraduate years. If you can't stand an atmosphere where everyone knows everyone else along with all their business, or overly exuberant people more concerned with playing games and clubbing than reading or studying, then MMC might not be the place for you. An education at MMC is truly what one can make of it.
