The State University of New York - Albany

I am an international student at UAlbany. My whole purpose to write this review is the frustration developed by my computer science department and the International services(ISSS) department. They take in a lot of international students which they can't handle, specially Dr. Randy Moulic. He thinks that to handle an unexpected intake he should change all the policies. He did not think that the policies of the department are considered by applicants before coming to the university.

Both the ISSS and Moulic are against the success of a student. I am currently in my third semester. I have an internship at the state office. But my juniors will not have the opportunity to have this, as suddenly today MR. MOULIC , the most senseless person I have seen, thinks that the internships at state office should not be considered for credit.

This was not stated at the time of admission.
The criteria for internship credits was that it should be related to field we are pursuing. It sure is MR.Moulic.

The only problem here is that you don't want international students to prosper and just want to hoard in money from us.

Now coming to the ISSS, in every other university the ISSS is for the international student's welfare, here they are for the departments welfare. They are the like the people who tell you are safe in our hands, but instead are the people we should be scared of.

They do not sanction CPT very easily.
Even if you work hard and get a job these monsters are there to suck you out of it."SO PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THIS UNIVERSITY IF YOU ARE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT."

Whatever you do, don't go here! The programs and facilities are severely outdated. Staff and faculty are incredibly rude! The buildings are falling apart. The town of albany is unsafe, and ghetto!!! Worse than Fresno-I've lived there so I can say that. My friend was mugged in the park. We lived next door to a fat house and a crack house. The townspeople have no souls. Really. You'll be miserable if you go!

Most of the political science and one of the public admin professors I experienced strongly oppose mathematics, science and interdisciplinary research. I was verbally told I could have a famous computer science professor on my thesis committee and could minor in methodology, but when the time came was denied. Students may *not* point out logic flaws in any assigned readings or suggest improvements to theory or be falsely accused, slandered, and libeled within the department and preposterous stories made up about alleged events months or years after they allegedly occurred. For instance if you have to walk to your car at night after class and the instructor parks in the same lot but further in, you will be accused of stalking your professor by "following them to their car"! Really!

An anti-mathematics article is assigned in a required course for all students and your grade will suffer severely on any paper in which you employ any pertinent findings from the natural sciences. I.e. you had better espouse any nonsensical group think they believe in or be the brunt of unbelievably unethical lies and slander and gross misuse of the SUNY student code of conduct process. Professors altered my electronically submitted papers,deleting large sections, before passing them on to the blind professor, who could not see the graphs, to "grade". The current Dean says, "algebraic derivation is not an acceptable research method in political science". The past Dean says, "political scientists are not supposed to solve [political] problems".

At least 3 professors teach, "if the data disagrees with your theory, never discard the theory because you've thought that through and know it's true", "Select cases for case study research that agree with your theory (select on the dependent variable for hypothesis-testing research)" and "no Ph.D. student could ever come up with better theory than the ancient [long dead] scholars" which, perhaps explains why the majority of professors refuse to consider any new concept or methodology they do not already understand and treat graduate students with great disrespect. I could go on. Most political science and public administration professors I encountered, incl. Dept. Chairs and Dean are unimaginably unethical and devious, and the university will not independently investigate their unethical actions. The public admin dept. teaches that "no independent experts should be consulted when making decisions because public administrators *are* the experts [in every field]". The theories they do preach can be used to explain continuing political problems and public administration failures, and you will be punished if you continue to use mathematical/philosophical logic or mathematics or natural science to work diligently to evaluate the methodologies or to introduce improvements. If you hate mathematics and natural science and want to learn how to espouse and market illogical, overly simplistic theory contributing to today's political problems, this is your college. SUNY at Albany departments other than political science seem to be much better as I also took graduate economics, geography, and biology courses here that were quite good, with open-minded competent professors.

I attended the Master's program in the Counseling Psych department.
Master's students are an afterthought - all attention is given to PhD students. I was able to take a PhD level seminar in another department (Educational Psychology), but my own department would not allow such a thing.

The Master's students are basically excluded from all research opportunities. I was a science major as an undergrad and made a shift to social science. I will never be able to successfully enter a PhD program because I had no research experience during my Master's.

The Community, School, and Rehabilitiation Counseling programs are virtually identical. Practicum/Internship placements are poor and fail to take into consideration the areas of interest of the students.

I am now a School Counselor, and ended up learning everything about it on the job, after the fact. Nothing I learned at Albany prepared me for my current work. The reality for school counselors differs greatly from what is taught.

Graduates of this School Counseling program are significantly less prepared for interviews and subsequent employment than those completing programs at Sage and St. Rose.Those considering the Community Counseling program should instead enroll in the MSW program - the Counseling Psych department has not made any changes in light of new state regs for licensure.
