Marywood University

I am a junior and I love it here. If you want to get an education, you will get a good one here. The professors are awesome! They get to know everyone because the classes are not that big. If your grades start to slip, your teacher will be on you immediately. They want you to learn, they all have extended office hours available to give extra help if needed.

All my friends are happy here. Everyone is really nice. The school offers activities here and there, but for the most part we make our own fun. The campus is a perfect size. I love going to the gym and taking Zumba classes. I try to get involved with different clubs and in turn I make new friends. We are never bored.

There are some people that are annoyed with the drinking rules, but COME ON you know about these rules when committing to come to this school. It is a dry campus. There are plenty of parties off campus?if that is a big deal to you. Marywood is a small private catholic school without a football team, so you will not have those big tail gate parties all over the place like you would at a huge university. Then there are students that seem to transfer from school to school but never find a perfect school?.those people are just plain miserable within themselves. You have to make friends and make a little effort because happiness does not just come magically.

Advice, before committing to any college; make an educated decision by learning about the school and its rules, and go for an overnight visit, as there really should not be any surprises as far as all that stuff goes.

I like it here; I have made the best friends ever, have had many good times, getting a great education?LOVE my classes, and I even like the food.

Education Quality: A+, Social Life: B+

These comments are very mixed. Let me give you all the pros and cons of this school
PROS:
1.Dorms are huge and new!
2.Food is great, buffet style every night and it's always something new.
3.Professors are pretty lax when it comes to homework and assignments. Usually you will only have 1 or 2 professors a semester that will give you busy work, the rest know your in college and do stuff like that in class.

6.Freshmen can bring Cars
7.Even though its a Catholic college, most people don't associate with the religion. Most of my friends aren't even catholic and some aren't even christian.

8.Scranton area has over 5 colleges so its a big college city
9.The cancel classes after 3 or more in of snow.
10.Parties are always going down in the Scranton area and in off campus houses
11.People are really close and friendly.
12. 2 words. PARADE DAY!!!!!
13.Scranton is full of hiking trails and scenic views, if you're into that.
14.A lot of buildings on campus are really new so its really nice. Especially around the Art Field.
15.Its easy to get a new roommate if you hate yours. You only have to put up with them for a week or 2 before the university gives you a new room or roommate and generally the second roommate is so much cooler.

16.The school nurse hands out prescriptions for everything, shes pretty chill.
17.Hardware Bar, cool night club.
18.Off campus housing is fairly easy to find.
CONS:
1.Winter is cold
2.Security thinks they are actual cops. How many security guards does it take to move a trapped car? In my experience exactly 7. They aren't the smartest.

3.The library is pretty old(note: they are knocking it down and building a new one this year)
4.Parking situation sucks. If your a Freshmen, you have to walk a mile to get to the Freshmen lot and if you park in a different lot they ticket you. And people break into Freshmen cars A LOT, because the lot is so far from the actual campus.

5.The ladies at the Cashier office are not the nicest.
6.Front Desk people think they're God. Hate them all.
7.Last year the power went out the week before finals and it took the school a few weeks to 'properly' fix it

8.Dunmore cops will arrest you for underage drinking, Scranton cops will laugh at you and tell you to keep the party noise down.

9.They have a lot of student clubs but not many students actually join them
10.Commuter students suck. They think they're cool because they are from the area, believe me, its not something to be proud of.

Campus Aesthetics: A+, Extracurricular Activities: C+

Hello, hello!
I was a freshmen at Marywood last fall and found that it did not suite me for several reasons. This year I had found some of my professors encouraging and I very much enjoyed the helpful relationships that I built with them. Due to the small classrooms, it was easy to get advice and learn from my professors and classmates throughout the year. On the other hand, I found other teachers to be a little bit inexperienced, immature and at some points inappropriate. Over all my classes were enjoyable and I did very well in all of them, but if you would like a challenge and a competitive environment, I would suggest attending another school. I personally found many people to be less then motivated and sluggish or closed minded when it came to the energy of the classroom.

As for the social aspect, Marywood was not only rated on the Top 20 Sober Schools List, but also, is the 9th Most Unhappiest School in America, according to Princeton Review (the other schools on that list are an assortment of military academies). Although many people enjoy Scranton, I found it dismal and mundane. Since I was an Art Major, I was disappointed with the lack of opportunities presented besides the First Friday and Drawing groups. I even found Scranton to be a bit backwards and behind in culture. And as for the party scene, it is available, but expensive (due to cabs to the University of Scranton) and often contains just the athletic crowd. Of course college is what you make of it. So if you enjoy fairly corny activities, being comfortable watching loads of movies in your dorm, knowing everyone in your class, went to a high school close to a farm, being under strict rules, enjoy cold weather, and being comfortable in the your own little world of Scranton, then Marywood is the place for you. If not, I would suggest another school.
