Good points: there are people here who love God. Those people are what make this school worth going too.
The faculty is (for the most part) very knowledgable about their subject matter.
The facilities are beautiful (outside buildings and classrooms).
Negatives:
The dorm rooms leave much to be desired- unless you enjoy (being forced to) room with at least three other people in a ten by twelve space). You can't bring much- because there is no room. And don't worry about trying to find an apartment- which is cheaper and more space- you have to live on campus unless you are living with relatives in town (helps them to supervise the students).
You have tons of required events which interfere with your studying and your sleeping (i.e. chapel, prayer group, artist series- which they've cut back on, vespers).
They require you to be on campus for sunday morning worship . . . slightly against the NT teachings.
They monitor every part of your life- check out to go off campus, say where you have been, checks on how many times a month you minister to others, checks on how often you attend night church (at one of the required and approved mammoth bastions of fundamentalism in the area), random "Dorm sweeps" where they (the dean of womens staff) go through everyone's rooms and all their stuff looking for "bad" music and other "uncheckable" stuff.
They preach personal standards. I don't have a problem keeping their rules- my issue starts when they start preaching that the Bible teaches these rules (about the only way to dress, the only music to listen too, the only type of church to attend, etc)
Go here if you want to be coached in "separation." Don't go here if you are looking to develop a lifestyle based on the "faith and love" found in Colossians 1. I'm desparately trying to understand that my works don't earn me God's favor- because this is what they teach (without meaning to, or even realizing this is what they are doing). If they find out that you disagree with something they believe is a "fundamental" of the faith- like separation- they will separate from you.Oh, and btw- they block this site on their exclusive web server at school. You have to be off campus to access this.
Dorm supervisors are awful. There is one in particular, her name is Ms. White. She is a devil in the flesh that will do anything to drive you nuts. She is about 40 years old and never been married. This should tell you something. What I mean is, she hates all the girls that are engaged! I was the case and I can tell you all about That.
All females there are desperate to get married. That is all they can think about. Jealous, if you are the lucky one wearing the diamond on your finger. Dean of women is not married and neither her right help, they both close to 50. They both will drive you crazy if ones you got in trouble. And what I mean by trouble is that you might have worn a skirt that did not cover your knees, or your top was tight. Literally, you have to wear size L if you are small girl. They will make sure you will wear; they will drive you crazy until you change the whole closet. Ms. White or dean of women would take all your clothes and will make you try each of them on to make sure they look according to the university standards. Guys have it easy, but they also have some stupid things to do. But the girls are the main target. Also you have to wear hosiery of all types and all the time. You are not allowed to get out of dorm without them, even when it is 100F outside! You can imagine how I felt!
Besides all that I listed above, there is so much more that will drive you crazy. If you do not believe me, ask anyone who graduated form BJU.
I read all the positive reviews and all I can tell you is that most of them are written by the close minded people, who never think on their own, and have been taught to think by BJU. Many of my friends who graduated from BJU for more than a year now, have a terrible memories about this school and none of them want to admit that they ever went there, even though they loved the school when they were there. They were brainwashed and they do admit that.
I can put my 4 years into one word – PRISON- and not only that, it is PRISON FOR Mentally Retarded people, and if you are normal, you will have a hard time to survive there.
