Bob Jones University

I had a really tough time at BJU. I came in as a normal Southern Baptist kid---did I say Southern Baptist--oh dear@! Needless, to say I spent my first year at school in a state of shock. I listened to Steve Green and that made me a horrible Christian. My second year I finally got the hang of things and I lived terrified that some other kid would take something wrong that I said and turn me in. I turned into someone that was perinoid to live life. I was terrified to wear pants because someone from the school might get the wrong impression of me and put me on Spiritual Probation. By the time I graduated I didn't know who God was anymore. It has taken me many years to recover from that school. Just now--with a spiritual counselor--I am re-learning that God IS love. As incredible as it may sound, just coming to the point to where I can make this statement out load has been a long journey for me. If you are a young Christian looking to go to Christian school--don't go here. Go to Ceaderville or Cornerstone.

There aren't many schools you have to bury in your resume, but Bob Jones is one of them--unless, of course, you're applying to another Southern, segregationalist, close-minded organization. There aren't many schools that toot their own horn so much--and then the alumni have to get another degree at an accredited school in order to get a teachers certificate. The saddest aspect to the school is the Christian veneer that covers the social and political conservatism. The legalism that pervades the school will kill anyone's individualism, anyone's understanding of grace. Fortunately, there's life after BJ.
