Huston Tillotson University

Huston-Tillotson College; now known as Huston-Tillotson University, predominantly black students and or minorities, which states a lot about this university, (the only considerate and compassionate people that actually helped and give me assistance at this university; were the Caucasian staff and employees). When I was a freshman at HTC, I was told by my advisor (I have over four different advisors while I attended HTU, every year it was someone different) at the time that I could only do 11 hours as a freshman, which I did; later to find out that I had only been limited and being a full-time student consisted of 12 hours. Registration was always a hassle, it took three or more days in order to be fully registered at this school and I was not a student that lived on campus or in the city of Austin at that time, which meant me spending a lot of cash and time. Every time I would call any department, I would get an automated system and or a voicemail. If I l left a voicemail, I would either not get a reply at all or weeks later. HTU doesn't even have a telephone service where you can be transferred from one department to another; you must remember all of these different extensions. However, whenever I would call another university, not mentioning of their names, I would always get a real person to speak with and if I did leave a message, they would contact me shortly after. For this university to cost as much as it does and even more too live off of campus, they should upgrade in a lot of areas. I withdrew from a semester of my courses and this university gave me "F's" in all of my classes that I had withdrawn from. I clearly feel that they really just want your money. They have parking on campus, which is limited and off campus, which is in the back of the school. They have had so many break ins and it makes sense as to why, because there is no surveillance cameras and they have a security car that sits in the back, but clearly there is never anyone secured in the security vehicle, which doesn't scare any potential robber or vandalize away. Staff has attitudes, when they take a lunch, they sometimes do not come back from that lunch (mainly the employees in the registration building). Any good and great professor and or instructor that they once had, has left the university. The turn over rate in students and staff here at Huston-Tillotson University is so sad and says a lot about the school, which is horrific. The people that actually do graduate from this university, they hold their head up high and take pride in this school and that is great, however, the ones that I do know that have graduated, aren't even working or they only hold their heads high in regards to their sorority or fraternity of HTU and not their experience or Degree from this school. I mention HTU and people in Austin say, "Who is HT or what is HT"? This university had to nail down their lower level dorm windows, just to keep down the nonsense of student's inappropriate behavior. Why are they having to baby sit and child proof a university? Minorities need to get more real and handle their business and not speaking of all, but most. This university was founded by African Americans and it is so ran by and gives truth of the stereotypes involving "lazy" black people. One thing positive that I can state about this university, is that they always hire their alumni, however maybe this is the problem. Mr. Clark on the movie "Lean on Me" changed a school all on his own; HTU's entire staff cannot even make a difference in this school. And they speak on religion, when the majority of black females dress provocatively and the majority of black males look like thugs and they play loud music from their cars when coming through the campus grounds (inside the campus grounds and out back), they speak loudly and ignorantly and use profanity on the grounds. This university now has a graduate program (from my understanding, which took many years for them to get), I would much rather go to Prairie View located in Hempstead, which is a much longer drive, than go to HTU. I tried to acknowledge a university that wasn't so overrated and predominantly black, thinking that I was doing a great deal for myself and the community and to support my people, but the University of Texas should have been my choice. HTU speaks loudly and looks great whenever they are trying to recruit students, but once you are in and have paid your money, it is completely different and in a not so good way. Huston and Tillotson should have not integrated, but yet should have stayed separate; I was a junior at this university and I stop going for one year due to my lifestyle and other goals. I now, cannot even get back into HTU in order to complete my junior and senior years and get my Degree. But yet, they continue to send me information stating that I owe the school, which I do not; because none of my loans are in default and I still have Financial Aid available to me. Therefore, I will be attending either ACC or a trade school to get a certification or a degree through ACC and make more money in the medical field, rather than what I was trying to complete at HTU. Many years and lots of money wasted at for me at Huston-Tillotson University. I am not embarrassed or intimidated to speak up about this school and I do not take pride in knowing that I was once their student. For the few good professors and you know who you are, I salute you and I thank you for your positive inspiration at this university, for it definitely shined a little bit of light on this school and you are why I stayed as long as I did. HTU, you will not get any more of my funds or be able to use me as advertisement to make your school look impressive. HTU is lower class, dirty and it is shameful?.even its reviews give the school a C- and over 70% of students that attended HTU, stated that if they could start over, HTU wouldn't be there choice and they would not go back.
