Whatcom Community College

As I have moved on,I appreciate the education I received at Whatcom. Thank you teachers.I miss the supportive atmosphere and how fun you made leaning.

Here at Western, I am surprised to hear the negative apprisals about Community College education,(while they let students use cut-and-paste Wikipedia as factual information)

2nd Year Female -- Class 2007

Education Quality: A+, Social Life: C-

I really had a good opportunity granted by attending Whatcom. I was in the Running Start program, where HS Jrs amd Srs attend a community college and the state pays for it all except your books. So obviously it was a great opportunity to get two years of completely FREE education (I am a school nut) and get out of high school.

Although I knew a lot of people at Whatcom, from either HS or extracurricular activities, I still didn't feel a connection with too many of them. I definately made friends but not a lot of close buddies that I am in regular contact with 2 years later.

I found most of the faculty to be wonderful and very very helpful. The spend as much time as you need and want, to answer questions and just chat. There were only two teachers that I felt were either self-absorbed and stuck up or just incapable of teaching a class.

Now, I consider myself rather smart (straight A's + honors) and I didn't have to work hard to get those A's in most classes. The teachers were aware that some students were annoyed at the ease of the classes but the teachers wanted to make sure that the majority of the students passed and understood material. They would direct me to ways of self study because I'm able to learn on my own and offer "unofficial" encouragement.

The only thing about the school that really annoyed me was the lack of proper athletic involvement. I love athletical stuff but there really wasn't a big push towards getting the students involved. Ultimate Frisbee is real big on campus and it's a good sport -- sad, though, when it really is the only one. Well, Basketball and sort of soccer.....not really too exciting or talented.....

Considering that it was free education, I am really glad that I went there. If you are looking for a nice school that may challenge you if you are average but just entertain you if you are bright this is a good school. Also, you have to be able to make friends outside of classes cause people hear the bell and head to their cars.....Hey, it's a community college -- what do you expect!? Cheers!

Faculty Accessibility: A+, Extracurricular Activities: F

This college is ok. There isn't really anything too cool about it. There is no social life at all. You dont meet anyone, people come for classes and then run out to their cars. Plus there are hardly any students that go here so you see the same people every single day and you never really see any different people walking around campus. But other than that, the college is really nice. It's pretty, people are really nice and friendly. I haven't had any bad proffesors at all. They are all nice and very approachable. The administration is awesome. They will bend over backwards to help you out. They even called my cell phone to see how my first quarter was going! I didn't expect that at all! Over all it's nice, but I would chose another school because of the lack of social interaction. Unless you know people from high school, you probably wont meet anyone new.
