When you first go to the University of Miami it is incredibly exciting. The campus is beautiful, the people are beautiful and especially the city is beautiful. I felt that the faculty, for the most part were very friendly and intersting. I just graduated last year and in many ways I miss it. Depite this, what you should know is that UM is basically a rich kid's playground. Most of the people there are snotty and pretensious and if you are looking for a stimulating intellectual environment you won't find it. There is a Greek system there that rules the social scene but there are absolutely no parties anymore on campus because of the new dean. This means that you'll be going to a lot of ritzy clubs and spending loads of money. Don't get me wrong, I had a blast, but for four years I felt like I was stuck in a bad episode of Melrose Place. There is a general sense of apathy and a lack of school spirit primarily because it is a commuter school. I would suggest getting involved with as many activities as possible because it is much harder to meet people there than at other schools of its size. Many northerners go there initially intrigued and end up disollusioned by the superficial attitude that abounds. No doubt it is an ineresting experience, just don't forget your cell phone and gold chains!
