The two most useful things I learned at MIT: how to solve problems and what's truly important to me. I switched my major from engineering to political science, hung around a fifth year to get simultaneous bachelor's and master's degrees. I was in my department a short time and learned more there as an undergrad than I did in my Ph.D. program elsewhere. At MIT you will work hard but to survive mentally you'll have to learn to play hard as well. I found it hard to make friends in my classes—in many social science and liberal arts departments graduate students take the same classes as undergrads, and 28 year olds have different interests than 18 year olds.
