If you are an ultra-rich elitist than Albion College could be the right place for you. That is, if you don't mind being restricted to the 100 acres or so of campus because to venture far by yourself at night is to ask for trouble. There is enormous racial and economic tension between the students and the "townies" as the student body calls them. The town of Albion is economically depressed and predominately African-American. In the center of this sits a little campus with a bunch of kids from Detroit suberbs driving mommy and daddie's beemer and smoking weed that costs more for a bag than most of the locals pay for rent! And parents, please don't let them fool you into thinking that because Albion is a small college your son or daughter will be less likely to get involved in the party scene than if they attend a state school. When I was a student I worked for Campus Safety for my work-study job. The majority of my time was spent escorting women from one part of campus to another because they were scared or monitoring the frat parties (which are the only social outlet unless you are a jock or have your nose in a book 24/7). But have no fear. As long as you are able to make a sizeable contribution to the college endowment there will be no ramifications or repercussions for little Jane or Johnny. As for the academic opportunities, it is true that small classes and the ability to work closely with your professors is a huge advantage and that a liberal arts education is particularly useful in an ever changing job market. However, the down side to this that no one ever mentions is that if you do not get along with any of the professors you have very limited recourse since the departments are so small. For instance, I did not agree with some of the theoretical teachings of the education department (a little too soft and fluffy for the real world in my opinion). While the faculty preached to us to be understanding of the different perspectives and personalities of our students and to teach them to think critically and for themsleves rather than to simply regurgitate information, I found them to by hypocritical in their own classrooms. I was able to get "A's" onnly when I wrote papers or conducted projects that supported their particular ideology. If the experiences in my practicum led me to conclusions that did not fit their construct of what an educator should be I would recieve a lesser grade, even if my position was fully supported by facts. It is this kind of two-faced egotism that has left a very bitter taste in my mouth when I consider Albion College.
