in 1903, WMU is a dynamic, student-centered research university that
stands out among America's 4,000 colleges and universities. U.S. News
& World Report groups WMU among the nation's top-100 public
institutions. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designates
WMU and just 101 other public institutions as Doctoral/Research Universities-Extensive,
placing WMU in the highest category of its classifcation system
for U.S. higher education. Yahoo! magazine includes WMU among its
100 Most Wired Colleges. In terms of enrollment, WMU ranks
amoung America's 50 largest institutions. Phi Beta Kappa has granted
chapters to WMU and only 94 other public institutions. Many
of WMU's 152 bachelor's and 102 graduate programs are nationally
recognized, including those in aviation, blind rehabilitation, creative writing, education,
geosciences, medieval studies, and paper science and engineering, to name
