Major: Education (This Major's Salary over time)
BYU prepared me to be an excellent teacher. I am from California, and I chose BYU because it is so unique in that is it a very large, very respected, private religious university. The education program from 1990-95 was extremely challenging and rigorous. When I graduated, I moved to Seattle where I was able to find a job teaching in public school - exactly what I wanted to do. I felt well-prepared from the first day teaching, because my BYU experience had been full of individual training and teaching experience. After one year of teaching I became the reading specialist at my school, even though there were other teachers who had been there longer. My principal and observers were impressed that I already knew and understood reading teaching techniques that our school district was presenting at seminars for other new teachers. My experience at BYU was that it was very "real life". I feel like I got an incredible experience and a great degree and I wouldn't change a thing. I also have to say that BYU is a bit protective and sheltered, but that's part of why I wanted to go there - and there's nothing wrong with that. It's an unusual place. There are plenty of other universities, and plenty of people hoping for a spot at BYU. If it isn't what you want, then accept that and go somewhere else.
