If you want a top quality education, one that fosters critical reasoning and writing skills, than Vassar is the place for you. Don't be fooled, most departments will make you work hard for your grades. Unlike many of the Ivies, grade inflation is not rampant here.
There are a lot of awesome people here, both faculty and students. Such an environment is quite conducive to finding one's own place in this sordid, transitory world. If you are liberal you will fit just right. There are many, many students here who smack of poser, but there are also those who are genuine, friendly, and inspiring. I could never have completed my Vassar career without befriending the latter. One strength of the politics of Vassar is that you can be almost anyone you want, just be prepared to defend yourself if you toe the groupthink line.
Those who are LGBTQQ will find almost no problem with who they are. It is to the point where, though there may be a group of core activists, the LGBTQQ community is somewhat apathetic. If you are a person of color, there are many resources and a strong community to support you. Since there are a lot of people from, ahem, different backgrounds here, be prepared to defend who you are, even from the occasional, unexpected broadside from the left. The tiny nature of the campus may magnify the importance of what is really petty, but it is a lie to say there is absolutely no discrimination on campus (from other students, faculty, and workers). The town is pretty bad, especially in comparison to Ann Arbor, Ithaca, and Cambridge/Boston. People differ in the way they cope (cliquishness, introversion, escape, etc.) but enduring the social faults of the campus is well worth the education. Four years at Vassar really teaches you how to deal with a lot of different personality types, since you really can't escape them.
I would not change one thing about my time at Vassar, my decision to go here, or any other subsequent decisions, bad or good.
