Major: Business - Management and Administration (This Major's Salary over time)
I have gone through one year at WSC, and am happy to say I am returning for another. Westfield was not originally my first choice on my list of business colleges (others were NEC, and WNEC), but when I came to visit on my tour, WSC stood out more then the others. First off let me start by talking about the education. When it came time to choose my courses I was happy to learn that Westfield had actually put together a whole list of required classes that would be taken to fulfill my major all the way up to senior year. Then there was also a large list of core classes you would choose from to complete your schedule. This whole process, as well as adding/dropping classes online is made very simple, and I feel WSC did a great job coming up with a solid routine for picking classes. When it came time to going to class, I found that the buildings were all a few minutes away no matter what dorm you live in. Two exceptions were people majoring in CJ and Movement Science who have to take a two minute bus ride down the road to two other buildings. In the winter the staff does a good job of keeping roads and paths clear, making it easy to get to class on time. In the classroom I found a diverse staff that was clearly well educated in their field. In the end I would say the classes I took were a good level of difficulty. There would be times when you would find yourself with no homework at night, while other nights you would be swamped and staying up until early in the morning. I feel that as long as you GO to class and make an effort you will come out with a B. I would say that the education is not that bad even though it is a state school, and I am quite satisfied with what I have learned. Now let’s talk about the dorms. I lived in Scanlon Hall and if you’re reading this and have not applied to a dorm yet APPLY HERE. It lies in the heart of the campus, not even a minute walk to the cafeteria, about a three minute walk to Ely (the main building with the library, gym, subway restaurant, art gallery, pool), and about a four minute walk to the classrooms. Most rooms in the building are a triple and are very large; I was very comfortable in my triple. There are also some doubles and maybe a couple singles. Scanlon is right next to the main road so the bus stops right in front and it is also very close to the student parking lot (five minutes away). Scanlon also has a mailroom, rec. room (with big screen TV, foosball table, ping pong table, and pool tables). There are also two rooms with about 5 washers and dryers each. Lastly there is a large quiet room, where people go to study. Scanlon is a very busy building, if you want to make friends, then room here; if you want it to be quiet so you can study, don’t. You’re going to be living in a very big three floor building with long hallways. There won’t be a single day when you won’t have five of your friends walking into your room at some point. During the party weekends (th-sat) Scanlon is INSANE, people love to party. When students come back from off-campus parties at night everyone is out in the halls or in someone’s room. If you are a quiet person live in another dorm, ill talk about that later. The security in the dorms is very understanding that kids like to drink and party and will give you warnings before they actually perform any type of discipline. The RA’s are also understanding for the most part, they were younger once, so they know that the kids like to party and they will also give warnings before doing anything. The other dorms on campus are; Courtney Hall: also similar to Scanlon, four floors, big party dorm. Davis Hall: the worst dorm on campus, don’t live here, it’s far away from everything and is small, good if you’re studious. Lamners Hall: also small, good if you want to study, but close to everything. Dickinson: also a bad dorm, no hallways, only a couple rooms on each section, good if you’re studious. Apartments: on-campus apartments, for upperclassmen, lots of parties. New Building: never been in before, opening this year (fall 2005), looks really cool, live here if you can. The dorms are all in good condition and are well kept; the staff that cleans them are very nice and very approachable if something is broken in your room. The campus is very beautiful, especially in the spring when everything is blooming. The only bad thing would have to be all the cigarettes on the ground, there are a quite a few smokers here and I would say that is probably the ugliest thing this campus has. Next is the food, there are three major dining areas on campus, a subway that is also connected to a caf, the dining commons, and a taco stand that is connected to a deli type store. I don’t really know how to put a good light on the food here. When I eat at the cafeteria, I usually eat pasta, pizza, salad, make sandwiches and I am quite satisfied with those things. Now everything else they make, I would rarely touch. I don’t want to make it sound THAT bad, because everything is edible and for the most part tastes decent, but its college food and not many places are known for this subject. The other two dining areas serve great food, but it costs money. Next is the surrounding town. When most people think of Westfield they think of city slums, and lots of homeless people. I’m not going to lie, Westfield IS like this, but I would like to tell you all that WSC isn’t in this part of the city. Westfield State actually lies in a great neighbor hood, west of the more urban part, the college is surrounded by houses and is right next to a elementary school, there is also a huge park just down the road that everyone goes to when they skip their classes in the spring. Next ill talk about cost, when it comes to Westfield’s price, you really can’t get much better. I would say its more then a community college by a few thousand dollars. The school offers loans, student work, as well as scholarships, and when your first bill comes in the mail, it really isn’t as bad as you think it will be. The safety in the school is top notch, last year the only news I heard about were two girls who got mugged while walking back from their cars, and of course the typical things getting stolen out of rooms but that happens everywhere. Once again I would like to clarify…WSC does NOT lie in the city, so there aren’t any drunks walking around, you have a better chance of seeing a kangaroo out on the green then seeing any crack heads. Lastly I just want to touch of the subject of PARTYING. Thursday through Saturday there is always a party. They usually occur off-campus however, at student’s apartments. There are numerous locations around Westfield, and after the parties most people either go to the local bars, or go back to their dorms to continue with the partying. Lastly, I just wanted to mention the orientation for incoming freshmen. I know when you go to the orientation they make it seem like it’s VERY strict. I found out later that this is in fact not true! As long as you are smart with what you are doing, you can get away with a lot of things here. I guess that’s all I have to say about the school. I am transferring after my sophomore year, but this is only because I have switched majors. After only one year I have fallen in love with this school, and I would stay all four years if it wasn’t for my major. If you are a student who is unsure about what they want to major in Westfield is a great school that helps you decide what you want to become and will give you memories of a lifetime while you do it.
