Although the resources are great at UM, the professors do not really care if you take advantage of them. They are there to give you the information, not make sure you learn it. Even in small classes, professors don't seem particularly involved or interested in students. Although always available for office hours, professors are just there to answer questions, not be a friend or amentor. The kids here are mostly spoiled all-american kids. Although there a lot of commuters that at are hispanic kids from the miami area, they often stick together and add little culture to the community. Lots of jersey, ny, boston, and chicago kids. Everyone is pretty friendly, but no one is in to having a good conversation or trying anything new - its all about going to Coconut Grove or South Beach on the Weekends. I think most kids go here because they like clubbing and the beach - not to create an intellectual environment. A lot of kids get decent grades, give school no second thought, and go out 4 or 5 nights a week.I'm in a sorority. Here, there are no sorority houses so its more just like big groups of girls with similar personalities. The 7 main sororities are almost completly white with little diversity. A couple are nice, a couple are annoying, and the others are boring. Each sorority and fraternity definitely has a sterotype - so you better like their image if you choose to join.
