Visit www.stonybrooksucks.com. It's not the best site but the message board is very useful. Its a good way to see what problems other students are having. Stony Brook is only good for the sciences. The big name companies out there do not recruit from Stony Brook! The career center at Stony sucks because they have very few connections. Why would they if everyone just wants to go to med school after they graduate? Business and economics are poor and many graduates have a hard time finding a job. For engineering, the big companies recruit interns from schools such as Binghamton, Cornell, RPI, MIT, and Carnegie Mellon. I am not saying you cannot make it here majoring in something else besides the health professions, but it will take more work from you [i.e. networking] because Stony Brook will not hook you up. Thats why many students ultimately decide to major in the health professions because its safer. If you are interested in medicine, however, then Stony Brook is the school for you. You will have a lot of support but it will be competitive as well. Do not be fooled by SUNY, the classes are quite challenging and don't let yourself fall behind. There is also a hospital on campus to volunteer in and good research opportunities but you can imagine that is competitive as well.

The dorms are small but pretty good for my experience. Kelly and Roosevelt Quad are known as the projects but everywhere else is good and fairly clean. If you want quiet, live at Roth. Stony Brook looks depressing in the winter but it is beautiful otherwise because of all the various plants and trees. The food you will eventually hate due to the little variety, although you wouldn't think it at first glance. BUT compared to other colleges, Stony food is a lot better.
