My first year at Vassar was pretty good. The campus is beautiful, the classes were challenging, I met a group of friendly people that I thought I would be friends with throughout and after college. The only concern that I had was that everyone reminded me someone of the unpopular kids at high school- super eccentric in the way they acted, dressed, and their views on life. The kids on the outskirts of the bell curve. My final three years at Vassar were horrible. The best way to sum it up was that it was a complete 180 to the real world. The majority of people are gay or BUGS(bisexual until graduated), everyone seems to be a hippie, punk rocker, or gothic etc etc. This strange environment definitely took its toll on me. It was isolating and depressing. Additionally, I found that the students have a very NY city type of attitude, very cold, and self-absorbed. In a place where its "hot" to wear striped tube socks and your hair in pigtails, your fashion sense and your perception of the world can become confused. Additionally, if you arn't an underweight prepubescent male, finding love on campus is non-existent. I went through 4 years with one date, and a kiss from my gay male dorm mate. People are very weird at Vassar. Its not unusual to see someone with blue hair, peircings all over their body, clown makeup, or the like. Also being a laid back type of person, people were very uptight, passive aggresive, whiny, pretentious, and condescending. The education quality at Vassar is excellent, and the faculty are wonderful, but I really wish that I had gone somewhere else. I could have saved myself from three years of serious depression. If you can find a way to get along in the environement, good for you,but don't bet on it if you value normalcy in anyway, shape or form.
