Date: Jul 01 2007
Major: Communications (This Major's Salary over time)
Having transferred from out-of-state, the University of Miami was a welcome change of pace. Truth be told much of this was due to the often gorgeous surroundings of South Florida. Yet eventually, the more superficial aesthetics fade, and you really begin to take an honest appraisal of the University as a whole.

First and foremost, the School of Communication is very well regarded in South Florida, with a large network of alumni available for students. Majoring in public relations was a great decision; the faculty are very hands-on and energetic, and the facilities are excellent as well. A new building called

The International Building
opened in the Spring of 2007 and has been an invaluable resource in coursework, research as well as social gatherings and various professional events.

The downsides of UM? As of right now, parking is a b*itch (pardon my French) but the situation should begin to rectify itself soon. The dorms are nothing special, but plans to build new facilities have been approved. In sum, whatever "negatives" the University of Miami currently has will be improved in the coming years—so Freshman have quite the incentive!

Last but not least, the city of Miami is amazing in and of itself. Be it Coconut Grove, South Beach, or Key Biscayne, I can't think of any surroundings more beautiful. Clubbing is very popular, but I for one never felt pressured into doing anything I didn't want to do. You don't have to drink yourself under the table if that's not your scene, so don't feel intimidated. Of course, the clubs are great (if you know someone to get you past the velvet rope) but there are many other great activities as well.

In sum, the University of Miami has given me a completely new outlook for my professional future, not to mention greatly enhancing my present. Having just completed my first year as a transfer student (40 credits transferred, making me a sophomore upon my arrival) I'm quite eager to return!

(One last thing… a lot of of my peers have never visited some of the more unique attractions in the city of Miami—although they certainly should have! If you do get in, be sure to check out Vizcaya Museum and Gardens & The Fairchild Tropical Gardens. Both structures are absolutely amazing and well worth the entrance fees!)
