This is exactly the way I remember Vassar from the late 80's. It is sad that not much has changed in 20 years. |
There are PLENTY of genuine people at Vassar and insecurity comes with the age. Concentrate on the people you like, give the people you don't like a second chance and don't get sucked into the petty BS because it WILL drive you insane. |
Major: Philosophy (This Major's Salary over time)
I don't want to complain about my school without offering solutions to fix our problems but I don't think there is anything that CAN be fixed. Vassar is for a certain type of person. If you don't like being around people (i mean unusually anti-social), if you don't like people period, if you are a hippie that plans on being high the whole time, if you like being angry at everyone around you, or if use some other method of checking out of reality like studying 24/7 then this is the school for you. I thought I was a nerd…I am by normal standards but apparently I am more normal than I thought I was. Vassar, I am sure, is enjoyable for those who fit into its mold but that would go for any school. I am now looking at Grad schools in big cities b/c Vassar has shown me that I am not the loner I thought I was and I can't stand dealing with people who don't like people. But I would have to say that if you end up here and are discontent but don't want to leave, here is some advice: Don't take the anti social stuff personally. Its not that people don't like you it's just that a lot of the students are really insecure. This isn't a school filled with people that were the popular kids in highschool. Also, find a way to leave…and find ways to remember that Vassar isn't the whole world. Save up your cash and use it to make frequent trips to NYC, its only an hour and a half away by train. And go JYA if you can. You will need to leave for at least a semester. Enjoy your classes and pick a major you love. Also…remember that its only four years and in a course of a lifetime the petty Vassar BS won't matter. Plus…our alumni network is like gold.
