Major: Other (This Major's Salary over time)
I graduated in 04 with a BA in Professional Photography and a major of Industrial and Scientific Photography. This program is not an easy program, but if you're strong enough and have enough determination to get through, you would be just fine. The job market is very competitive and you really have to market yourself hard. You have to know what field you want to photograph and have a gameplan BEFORE you graduate. Do not wait until after you graduate and wait for people to knock down your doors. Newsflash, they wont. If you start the communications BEFORE you leave and get jobs or at least interests before you get your degree, then you will be better off than those who dont. The market is always calling for cheaper, faster, and more convenient services, which is why so many graduates struggle competing. They cant when faced against some amateur who is charging half the prices that the grads are offering. BUT, if the grads did their homework before they left, find out what markets are better than others, find a place they WANT to live in, and market like crazy, they should be fine. Career services is only as good as you give them chances to be. Career services wanted me to move to a different city than i wanted to live in, so they couldn't help me too much with my city of choice (which ended up being good because i landed a nice job) but if you're flexible and keep good communications, they are very nice to have in your back pocket. Just dont leave things to the last minute, which is a bad habit everyone has! Lastly, there are jobs in the silliest places if you look hard enough, it's when you're not looking that you get stuck in ruts. I got a job photographing various external store front photographs in the sacramento area and it was enough to pay the downpayment on my house. Normally i wouldn't have even thought of this company but when i gave them a shot, it was quite profitable.
