This whole year I have fought with the idea of transferring. However, I realize that once you look beyond what you dont like at Hamilton, there really are a lot of great things that people dont emphasize. The academics are perfect. Study abroad is great. The atmosphere here is so nurturing that when I went to the career center I felt like i was in my college counselors office again - after visiting the career center just once, I felt completely confident about getting a job after leaving here. Great faculty. Superb.

The downsides - yes, there are preppy snooty people here, as there are in every school. However, I think people overlook just how preppy hamilton is. It really isnt that preppy. Yes, there is a contingent of preppy people, however, there is also a significant amount of normal kids, and alternative lifestyled individualistic artsy kids as well. Anyone can find their niche of friends here if they make the effort. Anyone.

As for the idea of hamilton being this homophobic homogenous place - no. It's not. There are many different kinds of people here from all over. Basically I find that if you are a positive person you will love hamilton, but if you are a negative person you will have trouble loving hamilton (you will let the snow get to you).

as for greek life - I am not involved, however, I will say that a lot of kids are. But greek life at hamilton is diff than greek life at other schools, the greeks are obligated to throw campus wide parties every weekend which are really fun and everyone is invited. Yes, the greeks can be fucking annoying at times, but lets face it, without them hamiltonians would not have as much fun as they do on the weekends. also, the greeks dont have houses so they are much more integrated into the main campus population, they blend in and at times you dont even know they are greek.

Isolation seems to be another problem, however, the way I see it, undergrads tend to stay on campus anway - when else in your life are you going to have everything you need - EVERYTHING - within a fifteen minute walk.

The point is, if you make the effort to love hamilton you will, but if you keep complaining and get stuck thinking about the bad parts itll be harder to fall in love with the place.

Good luck with your choice.
