SUNY Albany was a terrible choice for me. I came out of high school with a 91 avg and 1280 SAT (back when it was math/verbal w/ no calculator). I went there because it was relatively inexpensive, and close enough to commute. The school has a depressed atmosphere, you have a bunch of down-state people who are barely able to form thoughts and couldn't get into NYU or Columbia so they come here and make the place miserable. Most of the professors don't care all that much about teaching, they will however pile on the work for you so you can have fun teaching yourself everything. The advisory staff is the worst of all.. it's just a degree mill,
pick something to major in and get out
was the impression I got while I was there. Don't worry if you actually are interested in what your studying. The career counseling and career fairs are terrible unless you are a accounting or CS major, in which case you will find multiple accounting firms to choose from. In fact if you go to the career fair, you will notice a disproportionate amount of firms looking for accounting majors. Ridiculous, the school isn't half accounting majors.

Don't waste your time here if you get over a 1150 SAT and have over a 83 avg. You will find a abundance of very stupid people here. It says something that I came in with a 1280 and was in the top 8% or so of admittance that year based on SAT, and I left with a GPA in the lower half, I hated my time at UAlbany and if I had to do it again I would have went to a much smaller more student focused school.
