I was incredibly involved in my small Catholic high school and was blessed academically, athletically, and socially. I put all my eggs in one basket when applying to college and did not receive the financial aid necessary, so I went to Salve Regina based on their more-than-generous financial offer. Salve is the most aesthetically phenomenal campus I have ever seen, but the Salve community is lacking. My high school curriculum was more challenging, but the faculty to student ratio at Salve is a low one, so interpersonal relationships with professors is positive if this is what you are seeking when applying to college. The school (in my experience) is overly concerned with on and off-campus drinking and the Dean of Undergraduates sent the Newport police officers to my house on Corne St. because they heard "rumors" that my roommates and I were underage drinking off-campus. This event occurred during the afternoon, after my roommates and I got out of class…Newport police cop car in my driveway. Diversity is low, and you will find that the student minorities are often either a target or thrown onto the Salve website for appearances. The RIPTA will set you up to go to Providence for weekend activities due to its dry campus, placing its students in sketchy bars willing to accept fake IDs and naive freshmen. Like any college, it is difficult to find a "crowd," but the overall winter environment can be depressing. I had a job and was a full-time student, but without any social life besides off-campus bars, I found myself feeling unbalanced. The school is Catholic, but has a great club for gays compared to other Catholic colleges. Whether positive or negative, your college experience will differ from those of other college students if you choose to attend SRU, due to its secluded island setting and bipolar town, with poverty on one end and lavish mansions on the other. Academic difficulty ranges by major.
