Major: Mechanical Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
I believe KU's engineering department is a completely different animal from the rest of the university. I did not expect their programs to be as intensive and thorough as they ended up being. The classes are very demanded and are directly applicable to your field from day one. Prepare to spend 5 hours a week in class for each 3 hour engineering class and many times more than that doing it's work during the week. The facilities are very new and up to date. The endless supplies, computer labs, department library, and serious coursework makes being a KU engineer feel accomplished, as long as you can survive.Other departments vary greatly in quality and difficulty, but many classes that seem easy will end up being time consumers.I lived in Hashinger on the 8th floor, we were know for constantly reeking of pot. I have heard very negative stories about the other halls, and I think Hash is probably the most fun to be a part of. That is, if you are in an easy major which allows you to mingle constantly with art students and smoke pot 24/7. With my major I found the atmosphere a nuisance to my study habits. I would only suggest living here if you aren't too serious about graduating on time, or have lax art major. The social atmosphere would be horrifying if you did not go into KU with an established group of friends from high school. Almost everyone is already divided into cliques which will go unchanged through most of college. The party scene is amazing if you know the right people. The main recreational activity is binge drinking as expected, given KU's reputation. I had a lot of fun partying with people I knew from high school and had some experiences I would never forget. My main problem with KU is that the mentality of students is very unrealistic. Many only attend college because that is where their friends are and that is where the party is at. Partying and smoking pot is an obsession/addiction for most students, school is in the background. This contributes to KU's massive drop out rate. Most of my friends are not going to graduate and are a major detriment to my ability to pass a major such as mine.I must say that Lawrence is an amazing college town. A complete oasis in the midwest. There are amazing parks, woods, rivers, lakes, and fields to explore satisfy the urge to get out in nature, something unheard of for kansas. In the end, I am transferring to another school. A large reason for this decision is because of the lack of future I see in many of the people at KU. But that is not to say many people will find that KU is the perfect school to suit their social needs.
