As an out of state student, I knew nothing about Eastern Kentucky until I got a phone call from a coach recruiting me to play a sport there. I came for a visit and knew as soon as we left, that EKU was going to be the right fit for me. I'm a student in the College of Justice & Safety, and I think this is a great school if you are interested in any field within. The law enforcement complex for the state is on campus and there are many people to talk to about future career opportunities/career paths. It is one of the better schools around the region as far as their Justice & Safety programs are concerned. If you are a freshman and are worried about finding a new group of friends, there are an abundance of groups and clubs to join. Even though I play an NCAA sport, they have many booths set up at the beginning of every year as well as signs throughout the year looking for new members and such. The city of Richmond is growing and had seen major improvements since I've been in school since 2007. The new Richmond Centre has given an abundance of options for shopping and dining that wasn't there earlier in my college career and we went to Lexington for better options. It seems now that new stores have been going in and the Richmond Centre is still going to get bigger. Honestly the one thing that has bothered me the most about Eastern and really isn't even that big of a deal, the amount of people that go home on the weekends leaving campus. It has gotten better since my first year but it still is prevalent that many students are leaving for home. I have never understood this since I'm far away from home, and one of the reasons I chose a school farther away was for the exact reason of NOT being tempted to go home and get away from my parents. You can have a really good time here on the weekends if you know where to go, I've had some great memorable times here.Really it all comes down to what you make of your college experience. No matter where you go, you must understand that everyone is there for different reasons. I know from experience that Eastern is no different and you can make your time miserable here if you really choose to do so. But in my time here so far, I couldn't have a picked a better fit for me and my family. GO COLONELS! (Also come to the sporting events, especially the tailgates)
