SBU has a fantastic faculty that goes out of its way to give you a good education. Its really the administrators who don't do a good job. Residence life doesn't protect students. Often students are of a lower priority than the administrators themselves. Much of the entertainment is highly focused on mainstream entertainment because of the lack of resources. The upper administration also doesn't advertise nationally, so most people are from NY,NJ or Penn. Over 90 percent of the surrounding population is white and from very low to middle class (according to census). There is little to do in town, so most students just drink. There aren't frats, but there are off-campus houses which essentially act as frats, but lack the university oversight which might control the pseudo-frats. SBU does feel extremely safe, however. One of the main issues with SBU is that the school comes first, the bureaucracy comes second, and everyone else comes last, so if you want a good administrative experience, Bonas is not the best choice. However, if you just want to get your degree and even a masters in 5 years, its perfect.
