I went to Salve for both my undergraduate degree (class of 2001) and my graduate degree (class of 2008). The campus is beautiful, yes, and Newport itself is charming, busy, hip, and culturally diverse. When I was a student I used to tell Salve visitors that I would still choose the school even without the physical beauty all around me due to the faculty, staff, and students. I always felt supported, and knew the faculty and staff were truly invested in my success. It was just big enough of a school that I didn't know EVERYONE, but just small enough so that I could play on two Div III sports teams and be a leader on campus through various clubs and organizations.

My education degree was top-notch. We were in the field as early as freshman year, and increasingly spent more time there through graduation. We were taught beginning teachers' standards, theory, and how to put it into practice. Our lesson plans were critiqued over and over until we could write them flawlessly. For those of us who were double majoring in special education, we were taught to write I.E.P.s with a focus on how to write goals with matching objectives—something I still use today in my practice. I am very confident in my teaching skills for students of all abilities and ages. I credit all of this to the Salve Education Dept.

As I grew older, my interest changed to psychology. Again, I returned to school at Salve as a graduate student in Holistic Mental Health Counseling. The program specializes in an east-meets-west approach to psychology. Currently I am a Clinician at a residential boarding school for children ages 8-18. These are among the neediest children in the northeast corridor, and my work is challenging, fascinating, and rewarding. My experience in this clinical setting includes individual, group, and family therapies, adventure-based counseling, skill teaching in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), MASTR Protocol / trauma informed care, Skills for Life, Drive-Thru Menu skills, and body-centered therapy. Additionally, I have much practice in preparing diagnostic psychosocial evaluations, comprehensive treatment plans, and completing assessments in fire-setting, sexual behavior inventories, and evaluating suicide risk, as well as intakes and discharge summaries. My work in grad school has prepared me for the challenges I meet today.

Salve will always have my heart, and I will be forever grateful for my education and experience there.

responseI am positive I checked off "female" and do not understand how this site pegged me as "cares more about aesthetics than the avg student".
