My advice for prospective Rutgers students: don't come. When you go on the tour, they make it seem awesome. However, the real truth comes out when you actually attend. Because it's such a big school, you really are just a number. Even as a freshman, you are not referred to any advisors or checked up on whatsoever. I understand this may promote independence, but how helpful is it when meetings with advisors are impossible to make because of overcrowding? Classes can be scheduled throughout all 5 campuses, meaning you have to take a bus. They are packed almost all of the time and you may miss 2 or 3 at a time trying to push through the crowds, which means you may have to leave for class over an hour early just to be there on time. The people are unfriendly, and if you don't make friends the first week you're completely screwed. The education level is just OK, I don't feel that I have learned a great deal after my first semester. The lottery system is AWFUL. You get a number at random to choose your housing after freshman year. It is not based on grades, so if you get a high number, you're either stuck in one of the worst buildings, or you don't get housing at all. I got a very high number and live too far away to commute, making my only option to live off-campus. This is one of the reasons I have decided to transfer, but I don't mind because I hate it here anyway. So long, Slutgers!
