I would NEVER EVER EVER go back to BYU!!! And if you are wanting to get into Elementary Education, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT go here!!!!! uNLESS…you are white and fit into this culture and mold of this place.

Please listen and let everyone know about this comment I am about to tell you, because I would LOVE to talk to the President of BYU about it. I am a single 31 year old who came back to BYU after a 9 year hiatus to finish up her last year in the Elementary Education Dept. Being non-married at 31 and a little bit bustier build and being from Seattle already hurt me. What I realized is only bias and discrimination were to follow me. Struggling with bipolar disorder didn't help, although I am medicated and took advantage of the free counseling services at BYU. Although I had a lot of problems with dress code and professionalism, I fixed every problem the education dept told me to fix, and made major improvements. However, they still kicked me out the student teaching program one month shy of me graduating!!!!!! I was almost there, and had worked so hard. I got good grades, and got along with my menotr teachers and was a good teacher. They said they didn't like my persoanlity,and never gave me good reasons as to why I got kicked out, and most the reasons were lies and exaggerations. I tried to appeal the decision, but they said I needed evidence (such as paperwork and taped conversations) to show there really was bias involved, although I know it was my bipolar and my personlaity difference that caused such a problem to them. But any other University would't have been so close-minded!!!!

So many other bad things happened, but I can't go into detail about all of them. All I know is that what BYU did to me is SERIOUS. Now I have to pay $10,000 more to finish up my teachign certificate here in WA state, and another year and a half!!! When all BYU could do is let me just finish a month in the program, and I didn't do anything serious enough to get me to this grave of a consequence. I know other students in the program who fit the mold of BYU culture and got away with yelling at CFA's, or talking bad about mentor teachers etc. way worse than anything I ever did.

Overall, BYU is a good school, but you guys REALLY REALLY need to take a serious look at your MCkay school of education dept, whether it's your Dean or your new faculty or WHATEVER it's gone downhill since 2000-2001. way downhill. And I will tell everyone about it. I was going to file a lawsuit, but because I don't have physical evidience or money, I decided to do myself and byu a favor by not. So yes, please realize that your school needs some change. It's got some major problems!! Mainly with the Elementary Education Dept. It's ruined my life. Not only with money, but now I am parnoid of authority, and I get afraid that I am always doing something wrong, that's how faculty made me feel!!I wish they could return my 23k I put into my education for nothing.So yes ladies, beware! And if you are anything diffeernt than what they want you to be, find another school, save your money.
