Major: English (This Major's Salary over time)
As a Christian, I attended Olivet hoping for a good college experience and a chance to grow in my faith. Neither was true. Not only was the school rather run-down and low quality for the cost, the students there were so… dramatic and strange! It was hard to know who to trust! There were two types of people at Olivet: fundamentalist, holier than thou folks and rebellious hypocrites. Dorm life was a nightmare for me. The dorms were very old and in need of repair. RA's were always in your buisness and expected to be your mother. As a responsible adult, I felt like I was being baby-sat all the time and it was horrible. The other students were obsessed with getting married and the preaching was always negative about sin. I understand the Nazarenes are a Holiness tradition, but it didn't seem to me like their form of Christianity was really about a relationship with God—it was all about following a bunch of rules; very legalistic and not what I was used to. The academics were not particularly challengeing, and I can honestly say I've had better professors who have had greater experience in their field at Community College and a state university. My current professors at a PASSHE university regularly publish and are active in their field… I never felt that way at Olivet. The food was really terrible and not worth the price. The location was not good for student life. There is absolutely nothing around.. and if you don't have a car you are out of luck. Also, there are strict curfews and you even have to get "passes" to go home. That is just ridiculous. I felt like every little aspect of my life had to be approved of by RA's and RD's. I once got in trouble during a room inspection for having a piece of paper in my trashcan and was promptly reported to my RD. My boyfriend (now fiancee)and I were once followed all around campus at night while we were on a walk by some nosey RA's who thought they would catch us having sex or something. I felt like I never had a moment to myself and could not truly live like an adult. It was a terrible atmosphere for an independent person like myself who is responsible and already established in my values and beliefs. Olivet seems to spend a lot of money trying to "display" their few famous alumni and their new fancy building projects. They hide all their dirt behind a fascade of "Christ-centeredness" and being "academically superior." In truth, I know some very… well unacademically inclined individuals who were accepted at that school. It's not selective and it's not worth the ridiculous prices you are paying. I have no idea where they are spending their money, but it's not on improving students' lives. Overall, the school is socially awkward, legalistic, fake, and not worth attending.
