Major: Music - Performance (This Major's Salary over time)
This had to be one of the worst four years of my life and for others, I know. The school's motto often used sounds like this: It's very affordable and the squad looks very nice, and that's where all the fun ends. You do get some decent professors but very few, and some are very very nice and extremely knowledgeable, but you have to hunt for them like for bats, because there aren't too many unfortunately. Most professors are adjunct and are not available for help outside of class. Also, there are very little networking opportunities available for finding jobs, and I am totally pissed by the experience. Once I signed up for an internship course that I paid for to receive a college credit, but they even never invited me and most of the students (95%), who were all in that same internship class I was, to continue working for that program, even as volunteers!! Also there is only one career center in the entire school, which only focuses on resume building and cover letters. We need experience, and this school doesn't have the foundation - internships, volunteering, clubs, study abroad, nothing. This school is literally a JOKE!!!!!!! NOBODY (faculty and students alike) are willing to help you out in any way. It takes months to receive financial aid, because the college "advisers" only "work" for their salary, not to help students out! They assist us by sending people from one building to the next, which is why it takes a very long time to get a response (sometimes over an hour for a single question!) Students here are treated as "numbers" to help the school's budget and not as human beings. In general, BC students are very arrogant and close-minded, so you never really get a chance to meet people or make any friends. With that being said, the "college experience" that you gain from this school s****!!!!! That's probably another reason why my resume is super efficient but I always get denied during interviews, and most of my friends who go to BC too(you don't get the experience from this school that you can apply for the real world). People who do the hiring want to see a human being who was involved in clubs and motivated to help and inspire others, and not just be study machine which is what 90% of the students are! There is absolutely no school spirit at BC, 95% of clubs listed are not offered, at least 75% classes listed are never offered at any given time, and when students try to start a club, the general response from their peers is "I am busy". People in this school take everything so seriously, and job managers want friendly and charismatic people who are easy to interact with. With that being said, the social life in this "school" is none-existent. This campus is located in one of the most unpleasant neighborhoods in New York City (Flatbush), and everyone just wants to get the f*** out of here once class is over - I don't blame them. This "campus" is DEAD after 5, and most students have never even heard about the "existence" of this "student club center". It's a commuter school. I would still give it a D for location and safety because public transportation is very accessible from Brooklyn College, and it's close to home, but I am in-state. I imagine how unpleasant this "college experience" would be for an outer-state student. I only made a couple of dozen friends during four years, and I am always willing to try new things and participate in events - occasionally BC has concerts and private events but only a handful each month - where even a minor concert with 30 people in the auditorium and 5 performers is considered a big deal according to BC standards. My advice is, think twice before attending this school, it's easy to get accepted there for a reason - learn from my mistake, and from tens of thousands of other students who did the same mistake as I did! The campus looks very nice from outside, but if you spend a week there, I guarantee you will feel miserable. Those students who go to BC and already have work almost always found that job on their own, which had nothing to do with attending Brooklyn College and choosing their major in the first place. If a student makes it to nice school, eg University of Illinois, UNC Chapel Hill, UC Davis, or even one of the SUNY's, GO THERE if you get a scholarship, DON'T wast your time and money here! I am an alumni in this school and there is no alumni network - you are NEVER notified about any "events" on this campus, because there just aren't that many. Big mistake. However, I will say this, Brooklyn College might work well if a student chooses the right teacher that will guide him/her for their major, and then they can move on in life. I should have just taken the pre-requisite courses, did independent studies on my major and transferred the f*** out of here while still an undergraduate, oh well. At least Brooklyn College has a good library and a few great professors, but once again, think carefully, if I would have done it again, I would have undoubtedly chosen a different school.
