I'll just outright say that I am a minority in several ways—a black, mormon woman. After I got out of high scool it was apparent to me that even though I come from a supportive, well off family, I'd struggle to figure out what exactly to do with my life because of who I was as a person. I went to BYU because I value education and my relationship with God. I didn't expect it to be easy, and it definitely was hard. I pretty much despised my GEs, which I finished my first two years at the university. I liked my major classes a little better. My favorite parts of my colege experience were, in no specific order, 1. my roommates, who were AMAZING and have been my best friends since I started living with them, 2. My minor, women's studies. It may have been difficult to sit through some class discussions because of the demographic at BYU, but I was genuinely interested in that subject, and 3. My real life experience. I got my first job and internship both on campus, and they gave me a sense of independence and purpose. Yes, it was challenging, and no, I didn't have fun the entire time, but all in all I wouldn't trade it for anything. [In case youre wondering, no, I did not formally date a ton, but I will say that I had around 10 really good make out sessions as a student here. I could talk about that scene on a another blog.]I grew as a person after going here. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask me.
