The University of Michigan - Dearborn

I had the opportunity to attend UM-Ann Arbor but I opted to attend UM-Dearborn on the fact of the smaller class sizes and more accessible faculty since I have always excelled with those resources. Have I done a little more research, I would have attended the Ann Arbor campus not because of what I have experienced so far here but because the life here just really isn't that exciting; at least if you are young. This is more of a professional school, unlike Ann Arbor. I haven't met anyone that looks down on the Dearborn people, except those from the A2 campus that are snooty. Overall people respect the University and its name, even if it is Dearborn due to its respected Business and Engeneering programs.

The pros is that it is a small campus that is well-maintained and safe and that the classes are smaller and accessible faculty; more so than some of the CC classes I've had. You have access to all that UM has to offer, such as student rates on athletic events in Ann Arbor and use to their student labs and libraries, etc. Like I also said, this is a strong Midwestern regional school and companies like Ford recruit heavily from here so internships and such shouldn't be too hard to find. Let alone work afterwards. This is a respected school in the engineering and business departments and this is a good undergrad school for those who want a solid and cheaper degree looking to transfer to graduate school.

The cons aren't as bad as others have mentioned. Yes the social life is bleak but there are clubs and such around. But as a commuter school, you should understand this. It is a small campus but there are plenty of bars and restaurants just outside of campus that are good. Parking can be a nuisance, however. There are bad professors as there are good ones. Just check ratemyprofessor and hopefully you can find a good professor. Coursework varies as well. Some classes are a challenge, others are mindbogglingly easy. For those coasting, its a plus. But for someone like me who likes to be challenged, its a con. Unlike Ann Arbor, the resources here are lacking a bit but I'm sure in time that will change as I think the Dearborn campus is looking to vastly improve, albeit slowly.

Overall, like any school, it's what you make of it. You can be miserable and hate it here or try and enjoy it and find that this isn't a bad school. Like I already mentioned, it is a recognized and well-respected University in the region and upon graduation you shouldn't have a hard time finding work. Yes it isn't Ann Arbor but 90% of people will see the 'University of Michigan' on the diploma and resume and not think twice. More so outside of Michigan.
