I agree with the commenter that Stevens is under-rated in the general press. Stevens apparently doesn't have the public relations budget that other peer schools have, however, its academics are up there with the best of the best. It's an engineering academy, and somewhat of a 'boot camp' in terms of the rigor and workload. Despite being a good student in high school, I had to really work hard just to keep my head above the water the first year.

I noticed the previous commenter's remark about the school being "military orientated (sic)". Schools are going to go where the money is for research grants. For better or worse, the United States is significantly increasing its defense-related R&D budget in response to the new threats of terrorism. Stevens, with its well-honed expertise in communications, chemical, and biological sciences has had great success in garnering government grants in those areas. This is not unique to Stevens. The current reputation of M.I.T was gotten largely due to its acquisition of War Department (now Department of Defense) research grants during World War II, particularly in the areas of radar, secret communications systems, and to a lesser extent the atomic bomb. They saw where the money was at that time and went after it. They also saw the opportunity to expand their name recognition. Stevens is following in those footsteps today, and you can hardly blame it for doing so.
