Saint Louis University

Do not, I repeat, do not go here. Saint Louis University does it all right to get you here, but once you come to the school you become another pay check for administration, not a valued student. As an ROTC student I don't mind the high price of the school and that wasn't a determining factor (upwards of 40K per semester now in case you are wondering)however I did need to get influenced to come here. To do so my recruiter told me that the Education program would certify me to teach in Illinois as "a lot of the education students are from Illinois so it makes sense to teach both". Last year I went in and noticed that my schedual was the same as those that were MO natives and asked the Counselor (Everyone has bad counselors, this is a school wide thing not just education) and she told me that they only certify in MO standards. Point Slu.

Then you must take into account the fact that you are a pay check to them, plain and simple. I had to take out loans to cover my housing fees and ended up with extra money in my account. The school did not pay me back that money, and I am currently still waiting for over 2k, and after this semester it will jump to 6k. They don't care about the students, they just want to look pretty and sit in their chairs.

If you want to live on campus you can, but it is over priced (most expensive housing in St. Louis by square footage) and the food they provide is poor. Rules are so strict that you can't even bring friends over at certain times if they are of the opposite sex. No parties at all unless you are Greek, which is a very small amount of people.

The only plus is the club teams, although the school cut a lot of their funding (while still raising rates to attend) so I am not sure if they are still as good as they were my freshmen-junior year. If you want a school with school pride, this isn't the place either. It is almost taboo to go to basketball games or even wear school colors around campus. The Simon rec is serviceable and the non-teacher/admin staff is nice, but that is as close I can get to complimenting SLU.Bottom line is that SLU doesn't care about you. If you are ok with that, and you want to deal with all the bureaucracy that it takes with administration to get anything done in your favor, have at it. Everyone else, stay as far away as possible. UMSL, Wash-U, and Lindenwood are in the same area and are all better then this place.

Do NOT come here if you want to have an active social life. There is absolutely nothing to do on campus because of how isolated the university is from the city. Contrary to what the University says, the University is not in Saint Louis. It's on the outskirts of the city in a crappy neighborhood. Fraternities suck, there are no houses and a good night involves going to the same crappy bar, Lacledes, EVERY night. Also, because of the small amount of members initiated you will have to hang out with the same 10 people all 4 years.

Slim pickings for male students here, there is a very limited selection of attractive women to choose from. Typical girl here thinks that just because they're in a sorority, they are attractive. When in reality they are just stuck up.Academics are great however, all professors were extremely accessible and able to answer whatever questions I had through email. If I wanted to just focus on academics, I would not think about transferring. However, if you are looking for a good balance between social life and academics, Saint Louis is not a good option. I want more of a social life and traditional college campus and will be transferring after the spring semester.

For the medical program, it is very ironic that the school doesn't find it necessary to have enough professors for the Chemistry program. In other words, there is one professor for the Chemistry lecture and one for the lab-for over 300 students. Both professors are arrogant, rude and unprofessional. The passing grade is a 40. That's right, a 40. Why should there be such a grade curve? Because the class is just that awful. If you are a nursing or other medical student, do not waste your time with SLU. The idea is not to teach you information, it is to see if you can pass. I am a parent of a college aged person; however, I am also a student-at SLU. There is no way I would send my child here. The students and parents are being ripped off. For over $30k a year, I would expect quality, not just getting by. One of my other classes was a complete joke, but it was not a medical related class. YOU SHOULD FULLY EXPECT A MEDICALLY RELATED JOB TO HAVE A QUALITY CHEMISTRY PROGRAM. The lab and the lecture didn't even match. Neither professors knew what the other was doing, but the lab was suppose to be based on what you were learning in lecture. This was the most disorganized thing I have ever seen. Whenever I confronted either professor, neither one cared and said that they didn't know what the other was doing. REPEAT: Both of these women were very disorganized and had the crappiest attitude I've ever seen from a "teacher". Several of the other students complained alot, but because they are alot younger, I believe that they just think that's the way it is. I was very impressed with the quality of student that SLU attracts. Most of the people I was in class with were there for a reason. It's a shame that they are being short changed in their education. In closing, I have already had a full professional career from which I retired. I am 40 years old and really desired a new challenging career. Sadly SLU is the only university in the area that offers my program and I do not forsee being a student past this next semester(only staying because of financial reasons). Do yourself a favor, if you are a medical program student, stay far away.
