Colby Sawyer College

If you don't have a car and don't plan to get a car DO NOT COME HERE. You'll be isolated in this tiny town. And that would be fine, but sadly clubs and events at the college are almost always lackluster and ill-attended. If an event has more than 30 people it's a massive success.

The town of New London has a weird relationship with the college because without the college this town would have nothing. The programs for adult learning the college provides is a major reason so many retirees live here. However, since almost the entire town is people over 60 years old, they really make sure Colby-Sawyer students have absolutely nothing fun to do. It's a very prudish town with no imagination as to what kind of college town it could be because all the retirees want everything to stay exactly the way it is.

For god's sake, the town was livid with the college when they set up a test-sized wind turbine for the sustainability efforts! The town is very conservative. It makes it a hard place to be an 18-23 year old trying to have some fun.

The truth is a majority of the students here do not care about much either. Staying in your room and watching Netflix is essentially what everyone does. There is a tangible air of tired boredom, not just with students but many of the faculty and staff. For example, despite it being such a small and beautiful campus, you can feel very isolated and depressed, especially if you have seasonal affective disorder.

I got a good education, but nothing else about the college was that great. As a recent alumnus, I've felt almost no support from the college. The alumni network is -- like events thrown on campus -- very weak.

This is a good school if you want to stay in New England, but no employer you talk to outside the region is going to have a clue about this school when they see it on your resume. Just something to keep in mind.All in all, I wouldn't say I had a terrible experience. It's a good school if you know what you're in for, and it's the sort of place you can develop a great mentor-mentee relationship with professors. Take a tour before you enroll and make sure this is the right place for you.
