Now I have a lot of great friends and it's even better. SUNY Oneonta was not the greatest place ten years ago so DO NOT LISTEN TO THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS, but how have things changed. To give it in a short run down. 1. Academics - Great advisors, professors, etc; intelligent, knowledgable, helpful, friendly. 2. Social Life - Awesome, really great people with a diverse backgrounds. You can meet anybody - people from the city, long island, upstate, and a decent amount of people from the surrounding states cause of the awesome education and music industry programs. I have met numerous kids from other countries[foreign-exchange students] - Dubai, India, Germany, Brazil. The bars are really cool, Greek parties are OK and I Am not even interested in greek life at all. [PS. My GF is in a sorority] 3. Campus - Beautiful if not gorgeous, little depressing in Winter but its appreciated the first couple of times. Surrounding environment is really nice. VOTED SAFEST CAMPUS IN NEW YORK AND 9TH SAFEST CAMPUS IN THE COUNTRY The only reason I feel people do not enjoy themselves are because 1. They just did not make friends which has nothing to do with the person but being at the right place at the right time in meeting some - luck of draw. I am only a few years older than most of the students and the immaturity that is ALLOWED here is ridiculous. Childish behavior is actually encouraged, especially through the various activities set up by the late night group and the residential advisers. You will feel terribly out of place if you have an ounce of maturity. Second, this college cares more about your money than it does about you. This is how such immature students even got in. It does not matter what grades and SAT scores you are coming in with here. Those packets that claim the average SAT score is so high here? It's a total lie. The open house people have been trained to lie to you when you visit as well - they do not tell you about the rapes, how there's way too much partying here, they do not tell you about the poor conditions of most of the residence halls. There are of course those few faculty members that truly do care about seeing their students succeed, but they are fairly rare. Most of the faculty includes those who are angry at life because they wound up at Oneonta after they couldn't find jobs elsewhere. This is because they either have terrible attitudes or they are truly underqualified. If you're unsure this is true, there is at least factual data showing that teacher salaries here are lower than surrounding SUNY colleges (in fact, my Chemistry prof left after one semester at Oneonta because Cortland paid more!). Make sure you are close to the adviser and faculty in your own major, because the general advisement and registrar offices are full of rude people who are unhelpful and will often tell you very wrong and sometimes detrimental information. They will even go so far as to completely messing up your future schedule so that you are stuck here for one or two extra semesters. I actually had an adviser encourage students to get D's because she received a D in her basic math class and look where she is, working in advisement! I never looked back and stuck with my own department's adviser after that. Also, the financial aid office is known for screwing students over and one male financial aid officer is prone to verbally abusing students who need help. Also, the school will keep professors who absolutely should be fired. This college has retained a professor who is openly sexist and has previously sexually harassed multiple female students. Another had been warned about not sticking to course material and instead injecting much personal opinion regarding religion and politics that has been highly offensive and unprofessional. The school also has a tendency to be extremely diversity-biased at the expense of student learning, which includes hiring professors from other countries who cannot speak english whatsoever and the school gives these professors special treatment. If a student should have a legitimate complaint about the professor's inability to teach, the student will be told that they are merely hateful towards those who are from other countries or speak different languages. The radio station on campus should pretty much be ignored unless you are a white male who hates women. Even if you come in with qualifications from a previous college station and your skew tapes, if you ask anyone at the station for air time they expect you to do extremely demeaning tasks (not the regular cleaning out the trash bit) for a full year before even letting you even touch that microphone. Not to mention the general atmosphere of the college. Many of the students come from Long Island and bring their snooty attitudes with them. There is a general lack of friendliness and elitism. If you do not make close friends your first 2 weeks here you are doomed to loneliness. You will fail even harder socially if you are not fond of bars or smoking pot because the town lacks much for activities and the college does not much put effort into having activities as well. However, there are a few good things. The counseling center is fantastic and actually far exceeds counseling services you can get out in the "real world." Do not judge that the counselors here are interns, as they are some of the most qualified psychology interns and the atmosphere there is friendly, warm, and welcoming. When there are those few activities on campus they tend to be a lot of fun. I've got to do things here that I might not have had opportunities elsewhere, such as handling reptiles, seeing birds of prey up close, taking a trip to D.C. for a global warming rally, and the school gets some really great comedians (such as Lee Camp). There's also an annual concert in the spring put on by the town and another local college. While there's always a lot of drama surrounding it, it's usually great music and great times as the entire town turns into a festival. The music industry major is quite large and there's a music industry club and the students in that major who put on shows on campus quite regularly and some of those have been quite a lot of fun. Also, don't overlook the fact that there's hiking trails behind the campus and a college camp in the woods complete with an observatory. I joined clubs, made myself approachable...and because I don't want to get trashed every night, I've found myself with absolutely no friends. I was not the most popular person in high school, but I was well-liked and have always been described as "bubbly" and "very friendly"...so not fitting in at all came as a surprise. If you fit in here, it works...it is a GOOD school. (Especially the Education Department) Also, hope you don't like to eat...I don't know anyone who hasn't lost 5 pounds because the food makes everyone sick. For one, the school is becoming a lot more selective. There accepting less then half of all applicants which is very good. You'll meet a lot of international kids[if your open minded] that come here because of its prestige and then transfer to Ivy Leagues and what not. People tend not to realize that Oneonta is a top notch liberal arts school at an affordable price. At the rate now, I would not be suprised in future years that Oneonta is comparable to the lifes of Binghamton and Geneseo. This past year , about 10,000 kids applied for about 800 or so spots. The social life is not bad at all. The Main is very nice and clean and gives off a miniature Boston like feel to it. The campus and its facilities are really nice.
