I love Stonybrook and I know I'm getting more than my money's worth. If you are interested in an active social life, be prepared to work for it or go somewhere else. An exception would be those interested in Greek life, then you may find stuff to do. There are always off-campus club parties going on hosted by frats/sororities or the club themselves so there's plenty of partying.Dorms are bad, but not as bad as other schools. The buildings are crappy, and there are horrible wind tunnels that freeze you to the core in winter. But there are a lot of flowering trees and they just renovated the area between the library and arts building with a huge lawn for ppl to have picnics and lie there and trees. The university is improving it's aesthetic qualities bit by bit but to get an A, they would have to bulldoze all the buildings (besides Wang) and make new ones.
Stony Brook has its pros, and a few too many cons. At the end of the day, it depends what you want and will do to achieve it. The aesthetics suck; they just do, jail architects designed the campus and I am not kidding about that. They are trying to improve on this factor however; and the new/renovated quads really are nice. Some of them however, Roosevelt Quad (college of global studies affiliated) and plain ghetto. The worst housing I have ever seen....
The profs; I found them to be really nice. You have your oddballs here and there, but most of them seem to be nice. Cant complain on that front.
The admin however, SUCKS...being a state school do not expect any thing less. As I say, they will delay any possbli service to you, but will be prompt about fees and fines. This is where the university fails completely. Remember; this is admin NOT THE FACULTY i am speaking about.
The university is located quite far from civilization too, and yes its true that the distinction between rich kids and not so rich kids is apparent. You need a car to get anywhere, and its still terribly expensive to buy things here. The meal plan sucks as well; 8$ for a sandwhich...eek! However, money talks; if you want a good academic school, excellent faculty, and a sound training in life in the real world, Stony Brook is the way to go. Life is hard, but the expereince you get is invaluable and i can confidently say that kids in a private school may not expereince the same. Be motivated, be wary and be aggressive- its possible to get things done.
