MIT strives to teach you a lot. In some classes here you cover in one semester what in other schools maybe covered in two semesters. The assumption maybe that since you are expected to be smart that you can handle it. Most average smart people can handle it. However I think the people who benefit the most are the super smart people.

Unfortunately, for people of average smartness it is easy to be dragged into doing the crap work (lots of problem sets, labs, projects and papers) and to think about grades rather than getting to understand the material well. (MIT has low grade inflation).

I felt that for some of the fast paced classes with tons of work that I spent my time studying to keep up with little room to reflect on the material. I felt I was studying rather than learning.
