Vassar is an interesting place…Socially it has around 2400 students, who are for the most part very creative and friendly. Vassar is extremely cliquey socially, and it's high priority to always be fashionable. Many people work really hard to be cool/hip/avant-garde. Friendships come and go and because of the small atmosphere, there is a sense of urgency/anxiety that makes it more emotionally felt than at other places. There are those diamonds in the rough who are solid and dependable, but all in all, the Vassar social scene, although a fun one, is fleeting and unstable. Oh, yes, and Vassar is one of the most queer campuses around, with an extremely large, diverse, and healthy gay community. Very accepting and liberal student body.Academically Vassar is pretty amazing. Professors work with you as much as you need, readings are intense, and there is plenty of opportunity for independent research. Even if a specific department doesn't exist, you can find support/funds/resources to study anything you want if you are a motivated student. The amount of work you put in, the same amount you get back. Vassar also makes it extremely easy to go study abroad, and promotes it as much as possible.Extracurricularly there are many groups to get involved in. Vassar is not so much a political campus as it is a social, so social extracurriculars thrive more than political ones, which tend to suffer from too much theory and debate over actual practice. Keep in mind, most of us here like art, literature, and philosophy over politics, math, and science. Finally, Vassar has got everyone beat when it comes to financial aid. It will meet 100% of your need, and if you need EVERYTHING paid, it will pay EVERYTHING.
